Isotretinoin is an oral retinoid (Vitamin A derivative) used in the treatment of moderate-severe acne, acne that is not responsive to other treatments and acne with the potential to leave scars.
It is a highly effective treatment which clears a majority of acne in most people after a 6-9 month course.
Often this result is long lasting after one treatment course of isotretinoin only. Although sometimes multiple courses or long term low dosages are required to maintain acne control.
Oral isotretinoin is prescribed and monitored by your dermatologist at Perth Dermatology Clinic. Blood tests are required during treatment and isotretinoin often causes dry lips and skin, increased susceptibility to sunburn and can cause mild muscle and joint aches and pains. Generally these side effects are easily managed.
Women must not fall pregnant during isotretinoin treatment or for one month after discontinuing therapy. Appropriate contraception should be discussed with your dermatologist.
Other, rare and controversial side effects such as depression should be discussed with your dermatologist prior to starting treatment also.
Our Specialist Dermatologists are very experienced in the use of isotretinoin and will be able to give you informed and reliable information regarding this treatment and all other acne treatment options that are appropriate for you.
